Visions of Albion Print
Saturday, 13 November 2010, 19:30 - 21:30 by stgeorgessingerspoynton
A concert of English choral music of the 20th century.  Featuring works by Parry (Songs of Farewell), Holst (Two Psalms), Vaughan Williams (Mass in G minor) and Finzi (Lo the full final sacrifice; Magnificat).  The early years of the 20th century saw a renaissance in English choral music, drawing inspiration from folk song and literary traditions to create a sound world that is umistakably of this island nation, and in which music is married to the imperishable glories of English prose.  This concert presents some of the landmark works which defined this world, from Parry's Songs of Farewell, composed at the end of his life and agianst the backdrop of the First World War, through to Finzi's evocative and sensitive Lo the full final sacrifice, written in the aftermath of the Second World War.
