For its Spring concert, Levens Choir will be contrasting
masterpieces by Henry Purcell (1659-1695), one of England’s finest composers,
with the ‘Requiem’ by Maurice Durufle (1902-1986), the great French organist
and composer.
The Purcell works, accompanied by strings and continuo, led
by Roland Fudge, will include the great anthem of 1685, ‘My Heart is Inditing’,
written for the coronation of James II in Westminster Abbey on April 23rd.
It is scored for 8-part chorus and semi-chorus and is a magnificent example of
Purcell in his most exuberant and celebratory mood. The choir will also sing 3
shorter anthems which display Purcell’s ability to respond to dramatic texts
with music of great subtlety and variety. The instrumentalists will also play
Purcell’s famous Chaconne in G Minor.
Whilst Faure’s setting of the Requiem is widely known,
Durufle’s account from 1947 is much less familiar. It shares much in common
with the Faure: the same sober reflective mood, the same extended and languid
melodies. In the organ part, however, it has a very distinctive voice, full of
subtle inflexions and chromaticisms. For the singers there are wonderful tunes
to enjoy and, occasionally, outbursts of great strength and choral power.
This performance will be fascinating and unmissable! Please phone 01539 730590

Costs: £12 on the night; £10 if bought in advance. Students and children free
