Tippett's evocative A Child of our Time explores the conflict between a boy and tyrannnical forces, extending the details of a true incident into universal significance. Negro spirituals provide expressive comments on the action. Parry's joyous cantatas with their opulent choral sound comprise the second part of the programme. I Was Glad has been sung at all  coronations since Edward VII's in 1901; Blest Pair of Sirens was described as "the noblest music written by an Englishman". Jonathan Scott accompanies the choir and will also play Walton’s glittering Crown Imperial March written for the coronation of King George VI in 1937.
