Mozart’s sublime genius is admirably illustrated in the two pieces chosen to open this concert.
The Nelson Mass was written in 1798 by one of Mozart’s great friends, Haydn, and, some 150 years beyond Mozart’s birth, Shostakovich’s second piano concerto is the last of the educational works the composer wrote for his children. An uncharacteristically cheerful piece, it was first performed by his son Maxim and then subsequently his grandson, Dmitri.
